Oklahoma Country Station Explains Why it Turned Down a Fan’s Request to Play Beyoncés Song

Earlier on in the week, Beyoncés new country song got denied request to play by a fan in KYKC, a country music radio station based in Oklahoma.

Many have attributed it to a longstanding history of racism in country music genre following a good number of blacks who have released country songs in the past decade and have been denied playing rights in local country music stations for some reason.

Beyoncé’s one of two new songs, Texas Hold ‘Em, was requested to be played by a fan in a local station in Oklahoma after a surprise Super Bowl commercial on Sunday.

The local station, KYKC refused to grant his request but instead sent him a “standard” email according to Roger Harris stating that they do not play Beyoncés songs on KYKC owing to the fact that they are a country music station. “I requested Texas Hold ‘Em at my local country radio station (KYKC) and after requesting, i received an email from the radio station stating “We do not play Beyoncé on KYKC as we are a country music station. “

The fan who tweeted his encounter on his X formerly Twitter account sent fans into an uproar as the tweet made rounds on Social Media.

When contacted about it , Roger Harris, the general manager of Southern Central Oklahoma Radio Enterprises (S.C.O.R.E.) explained why Oklahoma county station turned down a fan’s request to play Beyoncés song, “We are a small market station. We’re not in a position to break an artist or help it that much, so it has to chart a little bit higher for us to add it,” He added, “But we love Beyoncé here. We play her on our [other top 40 and adult hits stations] but we’re not playing her on our country station yet because it just came out.”

He however said the station would play Beyoncé’s new songs in the future.

He said he was interested in a fresh take on the genre.

“I’ve heard that [the songs are] leaning toward being country music, and I that like that,” Harris said. “I think that’s cool because we get tired of playing the same old beer drinking, truck driving… things like that. So, yeah, I’m really excited about somebody different doing a country music song.”

S.C.O.R.E. is comprised of five radio stations, ranging from FM to country. Harris said the KYKC station hadn’t played either of Beyoncé’s new singles because it follows trends from bigger stations.

The country music genre has been accused of racism with the dominance of white performers and musicians. This has raised concerns about racism among black musicians who foray into the country music genre.

History, however traces the root of country music to West and South African during the slavery era.

Nigerian Wigmaker Helen Williams Sets Guinness World Record with Longest Hand-Made Wig

In a remarkable display of creativity and determination, Nigerian wigmaker Helen Williams has etched her name into the annals of history by setting the Guinness World Record for crafting the longest hand-made wig. Measuring an astonishing 351.28 meters (1,152 feet 5 inches), this feat stands as a testament to Williams’ skill and unwavering commitment to her craft.

Over the course of 11 days and an investment of two million naira (£2,000: $2,500), Williams meticulously assembled the record-breaking wig. The sheer scale of her achievement becomes evident in the numbers: 1,000 bundles of hair, 12 cans of hair spray, 35 tubes of hair glue, and 6,250 hair clips contributed to the realization of this extraordinary vision.

While Williams has been a professional wigmaker for eight years, she openly acknowledges that this endeavor was far from easy. Physical exhaustion set in during the process, but the support and encouragement from friends and family became pivotal in fueling her determination. “I did not want to let them down, so I maintained my focus. The outcome is the longest hand-made wig in the world,” she expressed.

The logistical challenges did not end with the completion of the wig. Williams faced the unique challenge of finding a suitable location for accurately measuring the extensive creation. Her choice of a highway connecting the cities of Lagos and Abeokuta on July 7 added an extra layer of complexity to an already extraordinary accomplishment.

Guinness World Records officially recognized Williams’ achievement on Tuesday, solidifying her place in history. To share her remarkable creation with the public, she has proudly displayed the record-setting wig in her office, inviting people to witness her dedication and skill.

This achievement adds to a series of noteworthy records set in Nigeria, with earlier headlines featuring Hilda Baci’s non-stop cooking record. However, the recent record-breaking streak faced a twist when Irishman Alan Fisher unseated Baci a few weeks ago, highlighting the competitive spirit in the realm of Guinness World Records.

Helen Williams’ accomplishment transcends the realm of wigmaking; it symbolizes the convergence of skill, determination, and a relentless pursuit of excellence. As a professional wigmaker, she has not only showcased her ability to produce 50 to 300 wigs per week but has also extended her expertise to training hundreds of students and creating thousands of wigs throughout her career.

The intricacies of constructing the record-breaking wig involved a carefully crafted underlay with wig-cap netting and black fabric attached to a bicycle helmet. Helen’s attention to detail and innovative approach shine through in the meticulous process she followed to bring her vision to life.

Reflecting on her journey, Williams shared, “Finding the materials to make the longest wig was not an easy task. My experience as a wigmaker helped a lot.” Her background, coupled with a relentless pursuit of excellence, contributed to overcoming the challenges posed by this ambitious undertaking.

Despite the acclaim and recognition that now accompany her name, Helen Williams remains grounded, acknowledging the support that propelled her to this extraordinary achievement. The longest hand-made wig in the world is not merely a testament to individual skill but a celebration of the collective encouragement and belief that fueled this groundbreaking endeavor.

Tyla: South Africa’s Rising Star Making Waves Globally

South Africa has long been a cradle of diverse talents, and the latest sensation to emerge from the rainbow nation is 21-year-old Tyla Laura Seethal, better known as Tyla. From her multicultural origins to her meteoric rise in the international music scene, Tyla’s journey is nothing short of remarkable.

Viral Breakthrough with “Water”

Tyla’s ascent to stardom began with the release of her viral hit “Water” in July of this year. This infectious track, blending Afrobeats, pop, R&B, and South African amapiano, quickly became a global sensation, reaching the top 10 charts in a dozen countries, including the UK and Australia. Notably, “Water” marked a historic moment as the first solo South African song to enter the US Billboard Hot 100 since Hugh Masekela’s “Grazing in the Grass” over five decades ago.

The success of “Water” is not confined to traditional charts; it also took the digital realm by storm with a TikTok dance challenge, captivating audiences worldwide. Tyla’s ability to seamlessly fuse genres struck a chord, propelling her into the spotlight.

International Recognition and Achievements

Beyond the digital realm, Tyla’s achievements extend to the global stage. She toured with Chris Brown for his “Under the Influence” tour in Europe, marking a significant milestone in her career. Tyla’s foray into the fashion world was equally noteworthy, making her “first-ever fashion debut” at the Dolce & Gabbana show in Milan, where she not only attended but also performed at the after-party.

In the midst of these accomplishments, Tyla managed to remain grounded, expressing her disbelief at seeing artists like Megan Thee Stallion and Christina Aguilera using her song. Her multicultural roots—Zulu, Indian, and Mauritian—underscore her South African identity, and she proudly declares, “I’m a South African born and bred in Johannesburg.”

Early Years and Musical Calling

Tyla’s journey from Johannesburg to international acclaim has its roots in her early years. Born on January 30, 2002, she matriculated from Edenglen High School in Edenvale in 2019. Despite initially pursuing a degree in mining engineering, her passion for music prevailed, leading her to commit wholeheartedly to her true calling.

Her music career traces back to childhood, where she found inspiration in the performances of Michael Jackson and Rihanna. A young Tyla envisioned herself in the spotlight, and her dreams were fueled by the motivation she drew from young women of color in the industry, such as Aaliyah and Cassie.

Tyla’s journey from posting original songs on Instagram to being discovered by her first manager, Garth von Glehn, highlights her determination. Her debut single, “Getting Late,” released in late 2019, paved the way for national success and caught the attention of Epic Records, leading to her signing with the label.

The Unstoppable “Water” and Future Prospects

As “Water” continues to make waves globally, Tyla’s career shows no signs of slowing down. The accompanying music video, released last month, has already garnered millions of views on YouTube, further solidifying her presence in the music industry.

Despite her international success, Tyla remains deeply connected to her South African roots, emphasizing the importance of making the country’s sound heard worldwide. Her upcoming debut album is eagerly awaited, and she sees it not just as a personal victory but as a triumph for all of Africa.

American Television Debut and Beyond

Tyla’s recent performance on “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon” marked her American television debut, adding another milestone to her burgeoning career. Reflecting on her whirlwind year, she acknowledges the organic growth of “Water,” attributing its success not only to the catchy tune but also to the dance challenge that captured the imagination of fans globally.

In a recent interview, Tyla expressed gratitude for the song’s reception, stating, “Even before the challenge started, before the video went viral, people were loving the song. But I think what really took it to the edge was my performance of it.”

As Tyla’s star continues to rise, one thing is clear—her journey from Johannesburg to the global stage is a testament to the power of passion, talent, and the ability to create a sound that resonates across borders. South Africa’s youngest musician to grace the US Billboard Hot 100 has undoubtedly become a beacon of inspiration for aspiring artists on the continent and beyond.
